L’Arca 2021 – Casavecchia – Terre dell’Angelo – 96 points ZWC
Reevaluating such an old and regional grape variety is truly sublime.
The “Casavecchia” grape, with mysterious origins, is named after wines that survived the powdery mildew and phylloxera epidemics at the start of the last century, in a place called “Casa Vecchia” in northern Caserta, Campania.
Its deep ruby red color hints at a rich and intense aroma, featuring notes of undergrowth, tobacco, chestnut, ripe berries, peach flesh, and balsamic and iodine undertones.
On the palate, it is direct, intense, and persistent. The strong tannins take over the taste buds, almost drying out salivation.
Its warm and intense character, coupled with amphora maturation that adds a slight oxidative note, and its long finish, make it a wine for special occasions.
