Jakeli Wines – Saperavi – Khashmi – unfiltered- Qvevri 2021 – 97 points ZWC

When I express my love for this wine, every word feels superfluous, every argument thins out, and every sensation becomes indescribable without a glass to complement the experience.

Its color is an intense ruby red with violet hues when young, shifting to a deep red with years spent in the bottle.

The aroma of this wine, I believe, is the best expression of the Saperavi grape. Deep and intense, it feels like it penetrates the berry and emerges steeped in its scents. You’ll immediately find fruity notes of persimmon, ripe mulberries, peach, blackberries, sour cherries, and strawberries. In the background, herbal and balsamic notes fill the nose, creating captivating nuances that reach directly to the brain and take over. Rosemary, sage, licorice, and juniper give way to earthy tones of wet clay and underbrush.

On the palate, when young, it is broad and deep, with the aromatic notes immediately reaching and taking over the taste buds, delivering freshness. With its right acidity and consistency, this wine is destined to age, becoming complex and elegant over the years without losing its direct charm. As I mentioned, the tannins gently touch the taste buds, and the intense fruit flavors strike with balance and persistence.

The slight oxidative-iron notes releasing the taste of clay are nothing more than the distinctive characteristics of the Qvevri used for vinification for over 300 years.

Enjoy a glass of Saperavi from Zaza Jakeli without necessarily pairing it with food. The enjoyment of this wine, full of character and true to its origins, allows a direct and mental connection with its birthplace, the marvelous Georgia, a land of history and wine.
