Etna Wines: The Volcanic Soul of Aitala Wines Takes Center Stage in Bucharest

Aitala isn’t just about wine, Aitala is a family with wine in their hearts.

Rocco Trefiletti’s deep love for the vineyard and winemaking has been passed down, drop by drop, to his entire family. His wife, Rita, masterfully oversees the winery’s organization, while their children, Silvia and Giuseppe, though following different careers, represent the new spirit of Aitala Etna Wines.

Located at the very heart of the volcano, Aitala’s vineyards greet the mountain every morning and draw from its energy to create truly unique wines. Just follow Rocco’s Instagram (as I do) to see the “Muntagna” watching over them every day.

A recent presentation in Bucharest, one of Eastern Europe’s most vibrant capitals, gave guests a chance to discover Aitala’s newest vintages — along with a preview tasting of unreleased wines.

Aitala Etna Bianco

This wine bursts with personality. Made from Carricante and Catarratto grapes, with a touch of Minnella — all indigenous to the region — it offers an intense nose of white fruits and elegant mineral notes. On the palate, it’s broad and delightfully drinkable, with a long finish that pairs beautifully with baked fish or meat dishes throughout a meal.

Aitala Syrah (Vertical Tasting 2021 – 2022)

I’ve been following Aitala’s work with Syrah for some years now, and this relatively new addition to their portfolio is a testament to their evolution. The wine is refined, well-crafted, with a smooth, harmonious structure and a volcanic character marked by mineral and balsamic notes.

Perfect for sipping by the glass in good company or paired with rich red meat dishes, this Syrah is a glass companion worth savoring.

The two vintages present a distinct evolution, making it worth acquiring both — enjoy now, and cellar some bottles to appreciate their longevity in years to come.

Aitala Etna Rosso (Vertical Tasting 2020 – 2021 – 2022)

You can feel the love for Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio in every drop of this wine. Each morning, Rocco tends to his vines with the care of a father raising his children. Every cluster is poetry, every drop a testament to passion and sacrifice.

This red is full of character, with aromas of wild berries and ripe red fruit, underpinned by well-defined balsamic and mineral notes. The palate is long, balanced, and richly satisfying, with elegant tannins that gracefully coat the tongue. The finish reveals a distinct volcanic salinity, ideal for pairing with spiced grilled meats or slow-cooked meat ragù pasta dishes.

Each vintage shows the winery’s evolution — wines worthy of being collected and shared with friends year after year, bottles to open with those you love.

The masterclass ended on a high note, filled with the thrill of discovery. The Aitala family is the real deal, genuine people, always ready to share their love for wine and the vineyard with heartfelt simplicity.

“Critic” at times even exaggeratedly of the world that I love the most, the wine world... because if the Wine Calls... We'll Be There
