Schioppettino, one of the oldest known grape varieties, is emblematic of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. Mentioned as early as the Middle Ages under the name “Scopp” in Friulian, it was named for the “crunch” of its berries, which would “crackle” under slight pressure due to their natural high acidity. In the past, this acidity would cause malolactic fermentation inside the bottle, making the corks “pop.”
Over the years, Schioppettino has experienced highs and lows, nearly disappearing in favor of international grape varieties in its region. However, it has remained steadfast in the hearts of many dedicated winemakers who continue to vinify it in its pure form. Among these is the Colmello di Grotta Winery, located in the Isonzo River Valley.
The Isonzo River, known as the “emerald” river, is one of the most beautiful waterways in the world. It flows from the karst springs of Mount Travnik in Slovenia, cascading through waterfalls and lakes before reaching the Adriatic Sea. The winery, situated a few kilometers from Gorizia, benefits from the river and the mountains behind it. Located in the municipality of Farra d’Isonzo, where viticulture thrives among the many villages and the river flowing to the east and south of the town.
The wine’s name, Schioppettino, evokes the act of “popping.”
The Schioppettino from Coldigrotta is immediately recognizable by its transparent ruby red color. Its olfactory notes immerse the nose in fresh red fruit aromas—delight apples, strawberries, currants, blackberries—and floral notes like rose, jasmine, and chamomile, along with darker hints of cloves, whole black pepper, and juniper berries.
On the palate, the olfactory sensations follow through to the taste buds, imposing yet delicate. It has good persistence and fragrance, making it a direct wine with long drinkability. Ideal for savoring something original, it is perfect for any occasion, capable of complementing dishes from a simple glass to a full meal featuring raw meats, tartare, carpaccio, or mushroom-based dishes.
Its unique structure makes it a wine to share with friends, perhaps recounting the territory from which it originates, immersing oneself in its beauty, and savoring every drop of this nectar. Best enjoyed at a slightly cool temperature.
